สมาคมพิทักษ์สัตว์ (ไทย) ก่อตั้งขึ้นเมื่อวันที่ 28 พฤษภาคม 2543 มีวัตถุประสงค์หลักในการเสริมสร้างสำนึกแห่งความเมตตา ให้สังคมเห็นคุณค่าของชีวิตสัตว์ และรณรงค์สอดส่องป้องกันแก้ไขปัญหาสิทธิและสวัสดิ์ภาพสัตว์โดยสันติวิธี ด้วยการจัดกิจกรรมหรือโครงการเพื่อสวัสดิ์ภาพและความปลอดภัยของทั้งคนและสัตว์ พร้อมกับเผยแพร่ความรู้ความเข้าใจตลอดจนข้อมูลข่าวสารต่างๆเกี่ยวกับสิทธิและสวัสดิ์ภาพสัตว์ให้สาธารณชนได้รับทราบและได้ตระหนักถึงคุณค่าของชีวิตสัตว์ รวมทั้งผลกระทบที่มีต่อจริยาธรรมและสังคมไทยไปพร้อมกัน มีผลงานอันพอจะกล่าวถึงได้อาทิ การแก้ไขปัญหาการค้าเนื้อและหนังสุนัข การแก้ปัญหาช้างเข้าเมือง ปัญหาการพนันกัดสุนัข การเสนอร่างกฎหมายสวัสดิ์ภาพสัตว์ จนได้ร่วมเป็นกรรมการร่างจรรยาบรรณสัตว์ทดลอง และพระราชบัญญัติป้องกันการทารุณสัตว์ฉบับแรกของประเทศไทยเป็นต้น หลักการ สมาคมพิทักษ์สัตว์(ไทย) เห็นว่าการอนุรักษ์เพื่อรักษาสายพันธุ์หรือชีวิตสัตว์แต่เพียงอย่างเดียวยังไม่เพียงพอ จำเป็นต้องคำนึงถึงสวัสดิ์ภาพและความเป็นอยู่ของสัตว์ด้วย โดยพื้นฐานความจริงที่ว่า สัตว์เกือบทุกชนิดมีสัมผัสและความสามารถในการรับรู้ความเจ็บปวดและมีความต้องการทางธรรมชาติเช่นเดียวกับมนุษย์ แต่ต่างกันที่มนุษย์มีสติปัญญาและสำนึกที่เหนือกว่า มนุษย์จึงสมควรต้องทำหน้าที่พิทักษ์สิทธิและคุ้มครองสวัสดิ์ภาพสัตว์ไม่ให้ได้รับความทุกข์ทรมานจากการกระทำเกินความจำเป็นเพียงเพื่อผลประโยชน์ของมนุษย์แต่เพียงอย่างเดียว เหตุผล ประเทศไทยจัดอยู่ในอันดับต้นของประเทศที่มีการล่วงละเมิดสิทธิและสวัสดิ์ภาพสัตว์และเคยถูกนำไปเป็นข้ออ้างในการกีดกันทางการค้ามาแล้ว แท้ที่จริงแล้วคนไทย ทุกภาค ทุกศาสนา มีพื้นฐานของความเมตตากรุณามาแต่เดิม แต่อาจด้วยความจำเป็นทางเศรษฐกิจและสภาพสังคมปัจจุบัน จึงมักพบเห็นการทารุณกรรมสัตว์รูปแบบต่างๆอยู่เสมอ และแม้จะมีหน่วยงานที่ให้การดูแลสัตว์ต่างๆอยู่บ้างแต่ยังไม่มีหน่วยงานใดให้ความสำคัญและรับผิดชอบปัญหาสิทธิและสวัสดิ์ภาพสัตว์โดยตรง เพื่อความสะดวกในการดำเนินงานองค์กรสวัสดิ์ภาพสัตว์ส่วนใหญ่แบ่งสัตว์ต่างๆออกเป็น 4 ประเภทหลัก คือ สัตว์เลี้ยง สัตว์ป่า สัตว์เศรษฐกิจ และสัตว์ทดลอง สัตว์เลี้ยงและสัตว์เศรษฐกิจนับได้ว่ามีความใกล้ชิดกับมนุษย์มากที่สุดและก็ถูกทารุณมากที่สุด ส่วนใหญ่เกิดจากความรู้เท่าไม่ถึงการณ์ จากความไม่รับผิดชอบ หรือเพื่อผลกำไร ปัญหาโรงฆ่าสัตว์ การค้าหนังสุนัข ปัญหาช้างเข้าเมือง ปัญหาสัตว์จรจัดและสัตว์พิการ เป็นตัวอย่างที่เห็นได้ชัด เฉพาะในกรุงเทพมหานครมีสุนัขและแมวจรจัดมากกว่าห้าแสนตัว มีสัตว์เลี้ยงที่ถูกกักขังทารุณ พลัดหลง ถูกทอดทิ้งตามอาคารร้าง บาดเจ็บจากอัคคีภัย หรือได้รับอุบัติเหตุอยู่เป็นประจำ ไม่ว่าจะเป็นสุนัขถูกรถชน ม้าหรือวัวควายที่ปล่อยให้เพ่นพ่านในที่สาธารณะหรือทางหลวง และแม้แต่ช้างที่เร่ร่อนขอทานในเมืองท่ามกลางมลพิษและเสี่ยงต่ออุบัติเหตุรถชน ตกท่อ หรือเหยียบเศษแก้วเศษวัสดุก่อสร้างต่างๆ รวมทั้งช้างที่เหยียบกับระเบิดตามชายแดน ขณะที่อนาคตของสัตว์ทดลองขึ้นอยู่กับความจำเป็นทางวิทยาการแพทย์และจรรยาบรรณของนักวิทยาศาสตร์ ชะตากรรมของสัตว์ป่าไทยตกอยู่ในกำมือของหน่วยงานและกลุ่มที่ได้ผลประโยชน์จากการทำลายป่าหรือลักลอบค้าสัตว์ป่า บ้างก็แอบอ้างการอนุรักษ์หรือพัฒนาเศรษฐกิจและปฎิเสธที่จะปรับปรุงกฎหมายคุ้มครองสัตว์ป่าให้รัดกุม สัตว์ป่ายังคงถูกไล่ล่าหรือเพาะเลี้ยงอย่างไม่เหมาะสมและผิดวัตถุประสงค์ในสถานเพาะเลี้ยงและสวนสัตว์ต่างๆทั่วประเทศ กฎหมายสิทธิและสวัสดิ์ภาพสัตว์จึงเป็นหนึ่งในภาระกิจสำคัญของสมาคมพิทักษ์สัตว์(ไทย) เพื่อเป็นการอุดช่องโหว่ของกฎหมายอื่นและเป็นหลักประกันไม่ให้มีการกระทำทารุณสัตว์ด้วยความเห็นแก่ได้โดยปราศจากมนุษยธรร
